It’s one thing if a candidate runs an attack ad filled with facts that cast one of their political rivals in a bad light. It’s another thing, though, when the attack is worded in such a way to make a good thing sound like something that is bad.

“The Bridge to Nowhere.” It is a phrase that was used effectively by the Obama campaign against Sarah Palin and now, Mitt Romney … (ahem) … I mean the “Romney Super P.A.C.” has been blanketing the nation with an ad that condemns Rick Santorum for voting for the same “bridge to nowhere” that Palin backed.

What is a bridge to nowhere, really? Before almost any bridge is ever built, the place that it leads to is pretty isolated in most cases. There are scores of very popular Keys off the west coast of Florida that would all be “nowhere” if there weren’t bridges leading to them now. Practically every costal state has areas that would be “nowhere lands” had it not been for some Nowhere Man or another who advocated building a bridge to it.

It’s a good thing that television didn’t exist back in the early 1800′s. Can you imagine the “Expedition to Nowhere” ads Thomas Jefferson would have had to endure while he was asking Congress to fund the Lewis and Clark expedition?

Or how about good old Chris C.? Would Columbus ever have “discovered” America in today’s politically slanted environment? Certainly there never would have been a Jamestown settlement and, later, a Mayflower journey to the New World. Talk about a “bridge” to nowhere!

I can already hear the progressive rock group, Yes’, sound track under the political ad if it were filmed today. “On a sailng ship to nowhere leaving anyplace” the soft tones of Jon Anderson would lead off with. Then, images of rough seas, sick and dying passengers, the harsh wilderness of America and, of course, the native American Indians, depicted as blood thirsty savages, would fill the screen. Throw in a smooth voiced announcer, deriding the trip to colonize America as a complete waste of money and you’ve got the makings of a political smear job that would have led to who knows what? Maybe the world would all be speaking German by now!

Of course, neither Rick Santorum nor Mitt Romney is without guilt as far as this type of thing is concerned. We all remember how they scoffed at Newt Gingrich’s idea of colonizing the moon. They might as well have called it a “Spaceship to Nowhere.”

Everywhere is nowhere until someone is there. No place has a chance of becoming “somewhere” until many people can get to it. Sarah Palin, Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich – Yours Is No Disgrace; “lost in musing circumstances, that’s just where you are.”

Political Republican Opinion Quote of the Day: “There are no constraints on the human mind, no walls around the human spirit, no barriers to our progress except those we ourselves erect.” – Ronald Reagan

Not only did they brush aside Obama’s decades of worship in the church of Rev. Jeremiah Wright, but they let him freely quote from the bible and think nothing of it.

During a <del>campaign stump speech</del> taxpayer-funded “official presidential visit” at the National Prayer Breakfast earlier this month, Barack Obama, trying to both prove what a devout Christian he is and justify taxing the wealthy, quoted from the Book of Luke, saying it “coincides with Jesus’ teaching that for unto whom much is given, much shall be required.”

It seems like Barack Obama has it backwards. Although there are a relatively small number of “rich people” who inherited their money, the vast majority of the truly wealthy have sacrificed their time, their energy and, in many cases, have risked every dime they had to make a dream come true. 80, 100 and 120 hour work weeks are not out of the norm for those who have reached the pinnacle of success. To categorize these people as having been “given” something is s slap in the face to their hard work as well as to capitalism, itself.

Then there’s the flip side of the coin. About half of this country pays no federal income taxes at all (some of these people even receive checks from the government – a negative taxation refund). Millions are collecting unemployment benefits for doing nothing. As people like Newt Gingrich have suggested, nobody should be receiving money without either getting an education to train them for a job or providing some sort of community service in exchange for the money they are given. “For unto whom much is given, much shall be required.”

I guess Obama’s distorted view of the Bible can be attributed to where he learned Christianity – in the America hating church of Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Since he obviously cannot find the proper words in The Good Book to support his views, perhaps he would be best to use quotes that he is more familiar with … “From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs.” – Karl Marx

Political Republican Opinion Quote of the Day – “All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.” – Proverbs 14:23

Their skewing of the employment statistics is right up there with the deceptive practices China uses to manipulate its currency!

While the average American is starting to feel all warm and fuzzy because Barack Obama has told them that the unemployment rate is going down, the President is hiding a dirty little secret; the number of people with jobs in this country has fallen to its lowest rate in three decades! According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics report released late Friday (which is when all presidential administrations release bad news that they want to hide), the number of able bodied, working age people who have a job of any kind (including part time jobs) is down to only 63.7% of the total workforce. A whopping 1.2 million people simply left the workforce last month and are no longer even looking for a job!

The unemployment rate, by definition, is the percentage of the labor force that is unemployed. It is calculated by dividing the number of unemployed individuals by the sum of the number of people unemployed and the number of people employed. The number of people unemployed plus the number of people employed equals the number of individuals in the labor force. An individual is counted as unemployed if the individual is over the age of 16 and is actively looking for a job, but cannot find one.

The only source used to determine the unemployed number is the number of jobless claims that are filed for unemployment insurance. When people choose not to file, either out of pride or because they are not eligible to file, they are not counted as unemployed. People who quit their jobs or are fired for legitimate reasons are not eligible for unemployment. Additionally, people who have been unemployed for so long that their benefits have run out are not included in the unemployment numbers.

This is how it is possible for the unemployment rate to go down at the same time that the number of employed people goes down. If that isn’t creative enough number crunching for you, the bill that congress passed last week will allow the President to manipulate the numbers even further. You see, slipped into the Payroll Tax bill was another piece of legislation that decreased the number of weeks Americans would be eligible for unemployment from 99 weeks to somewhere between 40 weeks and 73 weeks depending on the state in which a person lives. The bill also permits states to drug test certain individuals who are requesting benefits (see story here Congress Restructures Unemployment Benefits).

You would have thought for sure that you would have heard Democrats screaming from the rooftops about the injustice to all of the poor people who are out of work. That is, until you see what is really going on. Because there will be fewer people who are eligible to file for unemployment benefits, the unemployment rate will continue to fall – perfect timing for an election year!

All hope for the throngs of the real unemployed is not lost, however. It seems a loophole has been discovered. The stress and loss of self esteem has apparently been too much for some people to bear. Being out of work has allegedly caused them to lose their marbles. Fortunately, the government has another safety net to catch these poor suffering individuals – Social Security disability checks! You guessed it; as of January, the federal government has been sending disability checks out to more than 10.5 million people at a record annual cost of $200 billion to the American taxpayers. 5.3 % of the population aged 25-64 is now receiving disability checks from the federal government. Mental health claims have risen more than 23% in the last few years. And, the best news of all for all of the crazies is that once they start receiving the benefits, they can keep getting them forever!

The true irony of all of this is that the main portion of the bill – you know, the part that Barack Obama has been trumpeting regarding cutting your payroll taxes – is responsible for funding the Social Security disability fund. Based upon the current rate of <del>abuse</del> … uhm … people in dire mental unemployment strife … the fund will be completely out of money in just 6 short years. You can read the full story here – Jobless Disability Claims Soar …)

Stupid, stupid people of America, WAKE UP! This is not free money; it is a temporary loan. You will be paying it back in a few short years with interest (to China) no matter who is in the White House.

Political Republican Opinion Quote of the Day: “No drug, not even alcohol, causes the fundamental ills of society. If we’re looking for the source of our troubles, we shouldn’t test people for drugs, we should test them for stupidity, ignorance, greed and love of power.” – P. J. O’Rourke

Amongst other things, the Romney Super Pac ad attacks Rick Santorum for supporting the Alaska “Bridge to Nowhere.” The Bridge to Nowhere was part of more than 6,000 pet project add-ons in the 2005 Transportation Bill. With Rick Santorum surging and, in fact, now leading Mitt Romney in the polls for the Michigan primary, the Romney attack machine has just leveled its first volley at the former Pennsylvania senator. As was the case in the Florida attack ads that stopped Newt Gingrich in his tracks, the ads are filled with half truths that are at best, deceitful and, at worst, outright slander.

Amongst other things, the Romney Super Pac ad attacks Rick Santorum for supporting the Alaska “Bridge to Nowhere.” The Bridge to Nowhere was part of more than 6,000 pet project add-ons in the 2005 Transportation Bill. Many positive things were in the bill that had federal highway construction, repair and maintenance as its main focus in addition to new highway safety programs. It should come as no shock to anyone that there are often many pork projects tacked onto legislation by various senators in order to garner their support. Rick Santorum did not add the Bridge to Nowhere to the bill. If he would have been the one to add that piece of pork, then it would be a justified attack by Romney’s surrogates.

Another attack is that Rick Santorum voted to raise the debt ceiling five times while he was a senator. Here, Mitt Romney is trying to have his cake and eat it, too. Congress has been raising the debt ceiling for decades so this is a pretty lame attack. As we saw last year and again this month, not raising the debt ceiling would cause the nation to default on its debts. Just ask Greece what that leads to! The primary reason that Newt Gingrich is regarded with such disfavor amongst Washington insiders is because he led one of the only congresses that refused to raise the debt ceiling. This caused the government to temporarily shut down twice during the Clinton administration and many federal workers went weeks without paychecks. The press lambasted Gingrich, blamed the Republicans and it was ultimately the thing that caused the House to lose five seats in the next election. Many members of the Republican party scapegoated Gingrich, of course, and the split in the party is what caused Gingrich to decide that he could no longer lead a divided Party (hardly the “resigned in disgrace” label that Romney has slapped on Newt Gingrich). So, which is it Mitt? Was Gingrich wrong for not raising the debt ceiling and hurting his party or was Santorum wrong for doing it?

There is an allegation made that in a single session, Rick Santorum “co-sponsored” 51 bills to increase spending and zero bills to cut spending. According to the Romney attack ad, this blurb was taken from the Club for Growth report on Rick Santorum that does show that in a single year (2005-2006), he did advocate an extraordinary amount of government spending. The ad makes the average Joe think this occurred in the span of a single day, though. If you read the full Club for Growth report, you will find that Rick Santorum has a far higher favorability score than fellow Republican Senators and that “Santorum’s record on taxes is very strong.” The Club for Growth’s report on Mitt Romney is not nearly as favorable as Rick Santorum’s.

As the ad states, Santorum did vote to raise his own pay (this occurred only three times during his 12 years in the Senate – in 2001, 2002 and 2003). This is something, once again, that has been done for as long as there has been a congress. They raise their pay along with all federal employee pay to adjust for cost of living increases. I sure wish I could do that; though, it would certainly alleviate quite a few awkward moments with the boss!

Finally, the ad lumps Rick Santorum in with Hillary Clinton, stating he “joined Hillary Clinton to let convicted felons vote.” That sure conjures up some disturbing images doesn’t it? Can’t you just see hardened criminals in their zebra striped prison garb handing their ballots to guards through the prison bars? Unfortunately, that is a false image. What Santorum actually voted for was a failed 2004 bill that would have re-instated the voting rights in federal elections only to former inmates who had served their time and completed their parole and/or probation. Only 11 states currently deny those rights to former felons, incidentally. Some conservatives argue that the bill trampled on state’s rights. Santorum argued (correctly) that since it only re-instated their rights in federal elections, it was a federal issue and not one that the states should get to decide. To further shine a light of hypocrisy on this particular attack, Mitt Romney’s state of Massachusetts has an even more lenient policy regarding felons’ voting rights than the bill Santorum voted for. In Massachusetts, all state and federal voting rights are restored to felons immediately upon their release – even if they are on parole or probation.

This is the problem with politicians. They twist things to make another candidate look far worse than they really are while hiding all of their own blemishes. I can’t go as far as to say that the Romney allegations are outright lies. They are quite dishonest, though. It would be nice if we could just hear the the facts and make our decisions based upon the whole truth. Political honesty is apparently just another oxymoron.

You can see the attack ad, below:

During the Democratic Primary in 2008, Charles Gibson asked Barack Obama the only difficult question I think he was asked that whole year. The Democratic presidential hopeful did not have an answer then, he did not have an answer for it during the subsequent presidential debate with John McCain and he still does not have an answer. The question dealt with capitol gains taxes and how he could justify raising them. Not only did Charles Gibson point out that, historically, every time capital gains taxes have been raised, tax revenues to the federal government have decreased and that, conversely, every time they have been lowered, government tax revenues have increased, Mr. Gibson also pointed out that raising capital gains taxes would severely harm 100 million people in this country who own stocks or who have 401K’s that they depend on for their retirement income. Obama hemmed and hawed, stuttered and stammered (likely wondering where his teleprompter was when he needed it) and finally blurted out that he would raise capital gains taxes out of “fairness.” He pointed out that hedge fund managers were paying a lower rate than their secretaries.

While that may be true, they are certainly not paying less in taxes than their secretaries.

Well … he wasn’t saying that then, at least. Both during his recent State of the Union address and in subsequent stump speeches, President Obama has completely distorted the facts (a really kind way of saying he is telling bold face lies) and is now saying flat out that people like Warren Buffet’s secretary are paying more taxes than the Warren Buffets of the world are.

While it is true that the highest tax bracket is paying less of a percentage of their earnings in taxes than they were under the Clinton administration, it is also true that the lowest tax bracket is paying a lower percentage than they have ever paid in the history of the United States. The top 10% of wage earners in this country pay more than 70% of the federal income taxes. Almost half of the country now pays no federal income tax at all. Paying for 70% of the nation’s taxes is apparently not enough, by Barack Obama’s definition, and he would like them to be shouldering closer to 75% of the nation’s burden, or as he calls it, their “fair share.”

Facts are bothersome inconveniences to liberals; they are completely irrelevant when your party’s base is made up of people who couldn’t add three numbers together without a calculator. Candidate Obama cannot run on his record in 2012; he has been perhaps the biggest failure in every aspect of the presidency. He knows he cannot run on the vague promises of hope and change this time either. Instead, he has decided to try to turn Americans against each other in the hopes that he can appeal to the greed of the “have-nots” and pit them against the “haves.” He does not even care that history shows that he is wrong.

Candidate Obama is perfectly content to wing it with the dismissive reply that increasing taxes may or may not have an adverse effect on government revenues. It’s not really important; the end justifies the means. The “end” is, in this case, Barack Obama being re-elected.

You can see a replay of Barack Obama’s response to Charlie Gibson, below:

Political Republican Opinion Quote of the Day: “I will always vote what I have promised, and always vote the Constitution, as well as I will not vote for one single penny that isn’t paid for, because debt is the monster, debt is what’s going to eat us up and that is why our economy is on the brink.” – Ron Paul

The Right is framing this as a violation of the First Amendment of the Constitution. The Left argues that a woman is entitled to free contraception. So, lets break this thing down piece by piece, to see if we can come up with a rational conclusion as to who is really right here.

I’ll start right off by stating that I a not a Catholic. Although raised as a Presbyterian, I really have no particular religious affiliation at all, in fact. Whether or not I think the Catholic church is right or wrong about birth control being a sin is beside the point. I’m not a Catholic so I have no more right to tell them how they should run their religion than I do telling anyone how to live their life.

First, lets look at the First Amendment. It states,

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

It does not matter who pays for it, it does not matter whether an employee is Catholic, it does not even matter if the the employee is Catholic and does not agree with their own religion’s doctrine on contraception. Clearly, compelling the church – any church - to provide contraception to any individual is making a law that prohibits the free exercise of their religion.

Next, let’s look at the view from the Left – that all women are entitled to free contraception. I’ll definitely agree that all women should have the choice of whether they would like to use contraception or not. Anyone who believes in personal liberty cannot argue that point. Fortunately, you can obtain contraceptives practically everywhere.

The problem with the Liberal position, however, is that they believe women are entitled to free contraception. First of all, lets get the easy part out of the way with. There is absolutely nothing in this world that is free. One way or another, you would be paying for your “free” contraception. Either the cost would be built into your premiums if an insurance company was “paying” for it or it would be deducted from your potential wages if the church was forced to pay for the contraception. People who believe that they are getting “free” contraceptives are just as naive as the people who think there actually is such a thing as “Free Shipping.”

The more alarming thing about the statement is that they are entitled to it. There is very little in this life that anybody is entitled to. From birth, you are entitled to live your life the way you choose, reaping the rewards of good choices and suffering the consequences of bad ones. This country’s Constitution did not entitle people to food stamps, to receive welfare and certainly not contraception. The fact that the government has subsequently decided to provide these things to some individuals does not mean there is any inherent right to them. The entitlement mentality is what has put this country into what appears to be an insurmountable debt situation and what has people currently rioting in the streets of Greece.

The Left really has no rational argument here. Of course, rationality has never stopped them before, so why start now? From a health perspective, there is really nowhere their point of view would stop. Shouldn’t we all be entitled to free vitamins? How about free plastic surgery? It would improve your mental health, due to a better self image. We would all surely die without food, so lets make that “free” for everyone and lets throw in a “free” house while we’re at it (we’d all likely die if not for shelter).

Who’s paying for all of this stuff again? … Oh … that’s right; the “rich” people. Let’s forget the fact that you could take every dime they make and not even make a dent in the deficit – a deficit rung up by the already out of control entitlements. Obama’s tax hike on “the rich” would, in fact, not even cover 3% of the debt. According to the Heritage Foundation, for the first time ever, the average person relying on federal assistance in this country receives more in federal aid than the average person in this country has in disposable income. Not working pays more than working! How does that make any sense?

The entire contraception controversy is clearly a contrived ploy by the Obama camp to curry favor with women’s groups (which, in large part, are already his supporters). Just like the equally inane decision to … uhm … not make a decision on the Keystone Pipeline project was a politically motivated move to appease the environmentalists in the Democratic party’s base. Obama knows his supporters are too dumb to see through the obvious charade; after all, they fell for “hope and change” didn’t they?

Shrugging off the Constitution as an inconvenient document – especially the First Amendment – is setting a dangerous precedent. What’s next? If Michelle Obama decides that bread, due to its high carbohydrate content, is detrimental to the health of Americans is her husband going to forbid the taking of communion? Why stop at just religion? Lets shred the whole First Amendment and get rid of free speech, too. Lets abolish the free press and have only government operated news organizations. President Obama would love to appoint a new “News Czar!”

We creep ever closer to Communism every day under the Obama dictatorship …

Thinking that I, perhaps, had a poor recollection of history regarding the Gingrich reign as Speaker of the House, I started trolling around the web, digging up stories that hit the presses on the day that Newt Gingrich resigned back in November 7, 1998. Hardly the “resigned in disgrace” label that Mitt Romney is bludgeoning Gingrich with in a non-stop barrage of ads in Florida, the stories from the newspapers – many of which are regarded by most to be very Left leaning – tell an entirely different story. According to The Washington Post, several House members stated that Gingrich had confided in them earlier in the year that he intended to resign in December (he ended up resigning a month early because of the turmoil and division in the party that occurred after they lost 5 seats in the November 1998 election, although they still retained a 223 to 211 majority in the House). Rep. Bob Livingston (R-La.) who had announced earlier that he would run against Gingrich for the Speaker of the House position said after Gingrich’s resignation announcement that he was “terribly saddened that a man with such outstanding leadership ability and vision, a man who has [...]

Rep. Bob Livingston (R-La.) who had announced earlier that he would run against Gingrich for the Speaker of the House position said after Gingrich’s resignation announcement that he was “terribly saddened that a man with such outstanding leadership ability and vision, a man who has cemented his place of greatness in American history, has ended this phase of a brilliant political career.”

Bill Clinton, who had openly battled Gingrich over a myriad of issues, said “Newt Gingrich has been a worthy adversary, leading the Republican Party to a majority in the House and joining me in a great national debate over how best to prepare America for the 21st century. Despite our profound differences, I appreciate those times we were able to work together in the national interest, especially Speaker Gingrich’s strong support for America’s continuing leadership for freedom, peace and prosperity in the world.”

After hearing of Gingrich’s resignation, Majority Leader Richard K. Armey (R-Tex) who spearheaded the Contract with America along with Newt Gingrich stated that Gingrich was “a fantastic visionary [who] “transformed the House of Representatives.”

Spokeswoman Christina Martin said that after more than 60 phone calls from Gingrich to colleagues, the numbers showed that Newt very well could have retained his Speakership. Gingrich told her, though, that “this may turn out to be a fight that isn’t worth winning in the end, because the next two years would turn out to be a very ungovernable situation.” She also described the mood of the room during Gingrich’s phone call to the entire GOP. “The reception on the line was one of shock; of sadness; members [who had been given the opportunity to voice their views] were very choked up.”

One lawmaker during the conference call is said to have remarked, “Newt, you led us out of the wilderness.” Republican Party Chairman Jim Nicholson lauded Gingrich as “the man singularly most responsible for us becoming the majority party.”

Newt ended the call with “I love all of you; take care.”

Political Republican Opinion Quote of the Day: “Men make history and not the other way around. In periods where there is no leadership, society stands still. Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better.” – Harry S. Truman

After many, many requests, we have decided to revive the old Political Republican Opinion blog. It was taken down in early 2009 out of respect for the office of the President. It became increasingly more difficult to bite our tongues after we saw the disastrous policies the all-Democrat House and Senate were implementing under the guidance of Barack Obama. Instead of bashing the President any further, we decided to simply take the website down. Now that Barack Obama is really little more than a candidate (some may argue he has done little more than campaign during his entire three plus years as President), we feel it is our duty to listen to the voices of our fans and bring to light the crucial facts surrounding both the GOP and general election in days to come. Barack Obama has walked away from congress, stating that he can’t work with them anymore and is spending taxpayer dollars jetting around the country to campaign. If he refuses to govern, we refuse to be quiet anymore. We are at far too critical a time in our nation’s history to follow in our president’s footsteps, sitting idly on the sidelines as a spectator. Before we [...]

We are at far too critical a time in our nation’s history to follow in our president’s footsteps, sitting idly on the sidelines as a spectator. Before we take on writing about what is happening now, we want to reconstruct the website to include articles of the past. It is very interesting to see how most of the things we warned about have come true under the Obama Administration. Please bear with us; it is going to take about a week to repost all of the old articles. Until then, feel free to relive the past, compare it to the present and dream of a better future!
